Definitely Not Roy

By MicroCinema Scene • Apr 13th, 2007

Here’s a “one day wonder” from Austin sketch comedy group Big Ol’ Tire Fire. Part Friday the 13th fan film, part monologue gone bad, Definitely Not Roy is a sensitive coming of age story with a little decapitation thrown in for good measure. Definitely Not Roy was shot in one day with no lights, no permits and no planning. Enjoy.

Gimme Skelter Teaser Trailer

By MicroCinema Scene • Apr 4th, 2007

Here’s a teaser trailer for Gimme Skelter. This is writer/director Scott Phillip’s followup to the excellent Stink of Flesh. Based on the title and trailer, this looks like it has something to do with descendants of the Manson family wreaking havoc amidst the beautiful setting of New Mexico. After The Stink of Flesh, I am ready to see anything that Scott Phillips is involved with, so I’m really looking forward to this one.

Zellner Brothers vs. Duplass Brothers at SXSW

By MicroCinema Scene • Apr 3rd, 2007

Here’s a video capturing the latest filmmaking battle between the Zellner and Duplass Brothers. Held at SXSW the program consisted of short films by the two filmmaking teams who both have roots in Austin. It’s definitely an interesting and fun way to program short films. Once you get past the hucksterism of the brother vs. brother filmmaking battle you have a collection of shorts that gives a nice look at two very different bodies of work. I think the shorts actually work better when you can view them in some sort of context. This clip won’t give you any hint that anyone involved is a worthwhile filmmaker - but I think it’s a fun watch all the same. Film festivals don’t have to be boring!
