Butterknife Season 1 now airing
By MicroCinema Scene • Jan 29th, 2008 • Category: News, VideoThe season premiere of Joe Swanberg’s new web series Butterknife is now live! People seem to either love or hate Swanberg’s work, and this series is probably only going to reinforce your feelings. It stays true to Swanberg’s shaky, shoot-on-the-fly aesthetic, but filters it all through the detective story genre. Episode 1 is titled Plastic Hassle and introduces the lead characters - a private investigator (played by Ronald Bronstein) and his wife (played by Mary Bronstein).

Opening up a series with a hairy shirtless guy talking about having to shave up to his eyeballs… not a great idea to get me hooked. Story seemed sloppy and self-indulgent, but I’ll give it a few more episodes to convince me I’m wrong.
Very raw, but decent production values make it watchable. A brave effort. Likable and believable characters. I’ll watch more episodes, soundtrack seems a little too playful. There’s room for improvement but it’s way better then most low budget short episodics I’ve seen. If it was further developed I think it could be used as a pilot/demo.
