Aqua Rangers in the Perilous Pearl Pursuit
By Louis Fowler • May 8th, 2007 • Category: ComedyIn the year 2012 and due to global warming, the entire galaxy has been flooded with water, creating the Aquaverse. The only hope for mankind against the evil Ching Chang Fu are Webb Torpedo and Rusty Bolts, also known as the Aqua Rangers.
If it sounds like the set-up for a 40-style action serial, you wouldn’t be too far off. The Aqua Rangers is a laugh-till-it-hurts, perverse take on the genre, with all seven episodes of the “Perilous Pearl Pursuit” included on this disc. Thrill as Webb and Rusty take on such enemies as grizzly-dolphins, squid monkeys and exploding puppies as they search for the missing Princess Lovella, who’s been kidnapped by Fu and his Alliance of Destruction. I think there are some gay pirates in there too.
Nick Gibbons has written and directed an incredibly funny half-hour that takes no time getting into. The whole time I’m watching this, I’m thinking “Why isn’t this on Adult Swim?” It’s a million times funnier than their Saul of the Mole Men, which exploits the same concepts and style. The Aqua Rangers works so well because it’s in such small doses, never outstaying it’s welcome with padded filler that stretches the joke to the breaking point, kind of like the way SNL would do it. No, the Aqua Rangers is a hokey, hilarious good time that delivers one waterlogged laugh after another.
One more thing: be sure to check out the fake commercials in the bonus features. I’d buy a disc of those alone.
