Rectuma
-
There’s no other way to explain it; Rectuma is about a poor loser whose butt detaches itself and becomes a homicidal killer, acting out his repressed fantasies, and then thanks to a nuclear enema grows to Godzilla-size to terrorize the population. Those who loved the last sentence can keep reading, and others can turn back now.
This would be a good point to start employing clever plays on the words “butt” and “ass,” but every single one of them was used in the course of the feature, and frankly it just makes me tired thinking about trying to top it. Although there are a much higher percentage of groaners to genuine laughs, Rectuma does have some funny bits. What works for me includes Jean Black’s spot-on imitation of Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs, as a delusional cop who indeed believes she is Clarice Starling; and a really incisive parody of the singing twins in Mothra, providing an often rude Greek Chorus throughout. What didn’t work for me includes a lot—dare I say a buttload–of stale jokes that fall flat, and some unpalatable stereotypes that wouldn’t even pass muster in a 1960s Jerry Lewis film.
I was a bit surprised at the slapdash production values, as director Mark Pirro seems to have a lot of love for his genre-busting feature and infuses it with a loopy energy throughout. Some of the camerawork was shaky, a few of the effects keys didn’t look very crisp, and in one surprising sequence we clearly see what I suspect is a humble PA trying to lean back out of frame during a conversation shot in the front seat of a parked car.
But those who love Pirro’s intentions aren’t going to split hairs, and will enjoy his crazy quilt of rude humor and b-movie sendups.
Two and a half stars.
