Horror Business

Horror Business should be required viewing for anyone into indie horror filmmaking. It’s not going to help you make a movie or give you tips on how to get one done, but instead, it focuses on what drives low-budget horror filmmakers to spend countless thankless hours, slogging about in fake blood and testy actors just to get a piece of themselves on video for posterity and entertainment.

We’ll meet level-headed Dave Gebroe, director of Zombie Honeymoon as he tries to appease his cast and the creepy Ron Atkins, director of shockfests that are often diatribes against the Bush administration. We’ll catch up with Coven auteur Mark Borchardt as he starts production on his latest horror flick Scare Me. Along the way, there’s short cameos, with words of wisdom, from the likes of Lloyd Kaufman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Joe Bob Briggs and Sid Haig.

It’s a completely entertaining, fully engaging look into this admittedly non-mainstream world that goes beyond the realm of filmmaking. One sequence is a love letter to the drive-in and interspersed between interviews are quick clips of ancient newspapers ads for movies long played-out. Each filmmaker shows a reverence for the art of horror, and all seem to be doing it for the act of filmmaker, with it being common knowledge among them that making a dollar out of this is few and far between. It’s a refreshing take on the indie spirit that refuses to die.

Horror Business is an inspiring 82 minutes, and one that will cause any would-be filmmaker to give serious thought to the craft they have chosen to pursue, making them question whether or not they are getting into this business for the right reasons.
