Replay
-
In the near future, two young girls goof around with a virtual reality game harboring sinister origins in Ramiro Hernandez’s Replay.
Hernandez has a light hand with his material, and is full of good ideas, two agreeable aspects I also attributed to his earlier short 40 Seconds (reviewed on this site). Hernandez also got two likeable performances from his young leads, Emily Argenti and Nicole Richards.
But where Hernandez falters is with his production values; Replay is a little ragged around the edges with shot selection and editing, and has an unpolished sound mix.
As with his earlier work, I think Hernandez’s ideas exceed his current ability to realize them on screen; but frankly I appreciate this type more than that of the FX king whose shorts are all sound and fury.
Ramiro Hernandez’s Replay is an enjoyable short despite its technical shortcomings, and I will look for more from this creative director.
